Install Default Android KitKat 4.4 launcher on any android device

Android Kit Kat 4.4 may have been released recently with the LG Nexus 5, but it still is far from all the other "old" devices that we currently use. There are some unofficial launchers that are available on Google Play, but none better than the native 4.4 Home Launcher from the Nexus 5 released by our very own XDA guys. Here's a step by step guide on how to install it:

Step 1: Download the 'launcher4.4.zip' file from this link onto your PC/Laptop and unzip/extract it.

Step 2: Connect your Android device to the PC/laptop using a USB cable and transfer the 3 files extracted.

Step 3: Remove the USB cable, and on your mobile device open File Manager and locate the files transferred.

Step 4: Install the three apk files one at a time in the following order:

  • PrebuiltGmsCore.apk
  • Velvet.apk
  • GoogleHome.apk
Step 5: Once the above files are correctly installed, press the Home button on your Android device and select the New Launcher option. (4.4 Kit Kat)

I personally tried this on my Samsung Galaxy SL i9003 running a custom rom of Android 4.3 and it runs smoothly over it. It is also reported to run well on any rom based on Android 4.2 as well.

A video tutorial of this guide will be coming up soon on my YouTube channel so be sure to be subscribed to it.
